Community-based Work > They're Here

"Alive and Well" was a collaborative project with Sarah Sherwood out of Long Island, NY. She shared with me a bundle of her grandmother's old quilt squares. I then interviewed her about her grandmother Elizabeth, Elizabeth's life, their relationship, Sarah's children and the social conditions around each. Sarah then commissioned me to make a curtain using these squares and the interview. I made a piece that combines language and visuals from Sarah's memories, dreams and current hopes for her kids. The piece was specific to Sarah's home, a drafty old house on an island. She intends to use this curtain to insulate her drafty doorways in the winter.

Text reads "They're right here / they're fine they're / alive and well / all that you had / hoped to pass / is here / it just took / a couple generations"
