Oral Histories and Anthropology > Moments from the Margins (Upper Valley Haven)

The Moments from the Margins project was a part of Dr. Elizabeth Carpenter-Song's Mental Health at the Margins study (MHM). MHM is a collaboration between Dartmouth College and The Upper Valley Haven to explore experiences of mental health, housing instability and other rippling factors for living at the margins in rural New England. Dr. Elizabeth Carpenter-Song and Sara Kobylenski were major leaders of this study, along with support from a community advisory board and two institutional funders (Dartmouth Synergy and the Patient-Centered Outcome Research Institute).

This anthropology study used mixed methods of recorded storytelling, in-depth interviewing and participant observation. I was brought on as a Multimedia Workshop Facilitator, conducting interviews and gathering recorded stories alongside facilitated arts-making.

In the long term, this project hopes to better understand lived experiences so we may influence policy at the local and state level.

Below, you'll find a small sample of recorded stories told by guests and Service Coordinators at The Upper Valley Haven.
